Polocrosse Canada Umpiring Accreditation Program

Section 1: Introduction

1.0 Polocrosse Canada proposes to conduct an ongoing program to develop umpiring skills and accredit umpires at the club, local and national levels.

To this end, Polocrosse Canada has developed a multi level officiating program based on the Australian Officiating Program. The objective of the program is to:

  • Encourage and prepare people to become umpires.
  • To establish a nationally recognized system of umpire accreditation.
  • To upgrade the standard of umpiring.
  • To establish a better understanding of the common interpretation of the rules.

The program is designed to assist local, provincial and national polocrosse organizations with the presentation of courses for umpires and provide a consistent and fair evaluation criteria for accrediting umpires.

Section 2: General Information

2.0 Presenter qualifications

Course presenters and assistants must have a minimum Polocrosse umpiring qualification of the level of course they are presenting.

2.1 Assessor qualifications

Assessors of Umpires must have Polocrosse Canada accreditation at that level, or higher.

2.2 Entry pre-requisites

  • Candidate to be at least 16 years of age.
  • Be approved by the Polocrosse Canada Chief Umpire and / or the Polocrosse Canada Executive.
  • Be registered and in current standing with their local club and Polocrosse Canada.
  • They must be a Canadian Citizen or a permanent Canadian resident.
  • Thorough understanding of the rules of polocrosse.
  • B level umpires must have a minimum of 2 years playing experience.
  • A level umpires must have a minimum of 4 years playing experience.
  • Provincial level umpires must have a minimum of 6 years playing experience.

2.3 Venue

For the theory components a lecture room with access to a white board, writing material and video. The practical sessions will be held at a polocrosse field that is suitably marked.

2.4 Insurance (Is this correct, the umpires will be under the jurisdictions of Polocrosse Canada )

Polocrosse Canada holds a comprehensive insurance policy with Alberta Equestrian Federation & Capri Insurance. This policy covers public liability ($1 million) and professional Indemnity ($1 million) for all members and sport educators.

Section 3: Policies

3.0 Official’s Code of Ethics

The Canada Polocrosse adopts the Official’s Code of Ethics (copy at Appendix 1).

3.1 Complaints handling procedures

Candidates with grievances about the conduct of their training program or seeking appeals on their assessment process must submit them in writing to the chief umpire within 30 days of the completion of the training program or on receiving notification of their assessment outcome. All grievances and appeals will be considered by the Chief Umpire who will inform the candidate of the process they use to consider the grievance and the outcome of the deliberations within 30 days of receiving the grievance/appeal. Further grievances and appeals may be referred to the Polocrosse Canada Executive (with all relevant information) for consideration and decision.

3.2 Updating & Development

An Umpire must do 10 hours of updating activities per year of which a minimum of 5 hours will be practical umpiring and the balance can be obtained through activities detailed below:

  • Presenting
  • Assessing
  • Mentoring
  • Generic Personal Development
  • Sport-specific work shops/seminars
  • Contribution to publication of technical articles

Section 4: Competency Statements and Assessment

4.0 Competency statements

The Umpire will be able to:

  • Understand & effectively apply the roles & responsibilities of a polocrosse Umpire.
